Cook Islands 2004 Ned Kelly 50c Proof

Cook Islands 2004 Ned Kelly 50c Proof

Born in 1854, Edward 'Ned' Kelly was the first son of an Irish Catholic couple

In his teen,s Ned mustered cattle and broke in horses, but swiftly graduated to the crimes of cattle duffling and horse stealing. Accused of the attempted murder of a trooper in 1878, Ned an Dan Kelly found that a reward of £100 had been placed on their heads. Taking to the bush with Joe Byrne and Steve Hart, Ned and Dan saw the reward raised to £2000 for each member of the Kelly Gang after the death of three troopers who had ambushed the men at Stringybark Creek.

After raids on Euroa and Jerildrie, the Kelly Gang's 'last stand' took place in Glenrowan, where they took 60 hostages in a hotel. Dan Kelly, Byrne and Hard were killed, with a wounded Ned arrested.

Ned was sentanced to death by Judge Redmond Barry. Despite protests from thousands of people, Ned was executed at Melbourne Gaol in 1880.
