Australia 1967 Pattern Silver Swan Dollar Proof

Australia 1967 Pattern Silver Swan Dollar Proof

In 1965 the 'Australian Coin Review' magazine launched an internationally contested design competition for an unofficial Australian decimal crown. The successful designs for the two sides were originally submitted as the reverse designs for a twenty cent (obverse) and a two cent coin (reverse). They were not used for a number of reasons the chief one being that the panel appointed to select Australia's decimal coin designs was seeking a common theme for all coins in the series not a series of individual designs.

In 1967 a re-worked variation of the design depicting a 100 cent (dollar) was struck by John Pinches of London in three versions - 1500 in uncirculated specimen quality silver with a milled edge 750 in proof silver form with a plain edge (available here) and a further 10 in proof gold form with a plain edge. An extra thick lead test strike is also known to exist.
